Give as you earn

From 7 January 2010 employers have been able to offer a new voluntary scheme called payroll giving to their employees. Payroll giving allows employees to 'give as they earn' by making donations directly from their pay to approved donee organisations. For every dollar an employee donates they receive a third back as a tax credit in the same pay period. La Leche League New Zealand is one of over 18,000 organisations on the approved list.

 

Because payroll giving is voluntary, employers have the choice of whether to offer the scheme to their employees. Why not find out if yours does? Only employers who electronically file their employer monthly schedule and deduction form can choose to offer payroll giving to their employees. Donations are made through the employer's payroll system. The employer deducts any donation from their employee's pay, reduces their PAYE by the appropriate tax credit, and then forwards the donation to the chosen donee organisation. Once the tax credit has been calculated, the employee's PAYE is reduced by the amount of the tax credit. You don't need to wait until the end of the year to claim your tax credit.

 

Depending on how the scheme is set up, the frequency, amount and donee organisations chosen by employees can change at the employee's discretion.

 

If your employer offers a payroll giving scheme and you want to donate to La Leche League New Zealand, you need to tell your employer the:

•             name of the donee organisation - La Leche League New Zealand Inc.

•             amount of the donation you want to make

•             pay period, or periods, you want the donation to be made

•             the donee organisation's bank account or postal address -

Many people find giving a little regularly is easier than an annual lump sum. If you wish to show your support for La Leche League by making regular donations this new mechanism is the ideal way to do it. Simply set it up with your employer and it will just happen, until further notice.

With 150 Leaders in 50 Groups and over 20,000 contacts per year we provide an important reassuring voice and accurate information to help make breastfeeding more rewarding for many women. Leader training and ongoing education is a high priority and challenging to find funds for. Leader resources are another costly requirement. A Leader gives her time and often her resources freely.
