When Should Babies Start Solids

LLLNZ Media Release 18 January 2011

La Leche League New Zealand (LLLNZ) is concerned that a review published in the British Medical Journal (1) undermines the progress that has been made in improving infant health over the past decade. The review questions the World Health Organisation's (WHO) global recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding to six months.  The controversy has caused confusion for parents regarding when to introduce complementary foods.

More Support Needed for Breastfeeding Mums

Press Release 26 July 2010

Thousands of New Zealand mums are not breastfeeding because they don't get enough help, according to the country's leading breastfeeding support group.

La Leche League New Zealand, a mother-to-mother support organisation, says more emphasis needs to be placed on helping mums breastfeed their babies after discharge from hospital.

"Our maternity services are getting better and better at implementing comprehensive breastfeeding policies, but more has to be done to encourage and help mothers when they get home. We cannot hope for breastfeeding to become the norm if we do not give mothers the ongoing help they need," says LLLNZ spokesperson Lisa Manning.

LLLNZ Promotes Safe Baby Wearing

Press Release 21 April 2010

New Zealand mothers are being urged not to abandon safe baby wearing using appropriate slings following the recall of more than a million "bag" slings in the United States and Canada.

Three infant deaths have been linked to the design which bends the baby's neck, covers its face and can restrict the airway.

La Leche League New Zealand says that the deaths are tragic. However most slings are safe and advantageous when used appropriately. LLL spokesperson Alison Stanton says baby slings can be an excellent way for mothers to carry their babies. "Safe slings are great parenting tools. They keep babies relaxed, happy and calm. Babies' biological need for body contact and motion is met. In addition they can sleep anywhere and mothers can get out and about attending to the many other jobs they have, knowing their babies are secure and content.

Report Affirms - Breastfeeding Save Lives

Press Release 13 April 2010

Latest research suggesting over 900 babies would be saved each year if 90 per cent of US women breastfed their babies highlights the need for more support for breastfeeding mothers worldwide, according to La Leche League New Zealand.

The results, published online in the journal Pediatrics*, say if mothers in the US followed the global recommendation to breastfeed exclusively for six months, billions of dollars would be saved in healthcare costs for treating diseases such as gastroenteritis, ear infections, asthma and juvenile diabetes.
