Local La Leche League has groups across the country. They hold regular informal discussion meetings for mothers and their babies. Meetings are based on the importance of mother to mother support and cover a wide range of breastfeeding related topics including:
- Why breastfeeding is good for mothers, babies and our community
- What you can do in pregnancy/the early days after birth to help get breastfeeding off to a good start
- Overcoming or avoiding challenges/difficulties
- Family life with a baby
- Nighttime parenting and infant sleep
- Starting solids, nutrition and weaning
- How to continue breastfeeding when returning to work
Groups usually rotate through a series of breastfeeding topics – however every meeting is different and the Leader will cater to meet the needs of those attending. Some groups also offer childcare for bigger kids, toddler meetings, couples meetings, antenatal classes or café-style coffee mornings.
We also offer monthly online meetings on Facebook.
Most Groups have an extensive lending library of books and leaflets on breastfeeding, pregnancy, childbirth, nutrition and gentle parenting which are available for browsing or borrowing.
Who attends LLL meetings?
The LLL Group meetings give mothers the opportunity to share experiences, give suggestions and offer support and encouragement to each other. Meetings are facilitated by LLL Leaders and are attended by a mix of expectant, new and experienced mothers and their babies. Open discussion is encouraged and enables mothers to gain insight and understanding about how others parent and guide their children through breastfeeding.
In the past, mothers generally had plenty of support for breastfeeding their babies because their whanau had breastfed and it was an accepted norm. In today's society many of us live far away from our families or breastfeeding is not something that new parents have had much exposure to. LLL meetings are a great way to learn about breastfeeding and parenting from other mothers in a friendly and accepting atmosphere. Babies and children who need to be with their mother are welcome at LLL meetings.
Here are a few things mothers have to say about La Leche League meetings
"I was nervous to go my first LLL meeting as I had heard that the meetings were discussion based and I was unsure if it would be formal and inappropriate to take my baby with me. I asked my Mum to come along for support, but as soon as I entered the room I was warmly welcomed, felt immediately comfortable and learnt lots too!"
"I particularly loved how I was encouraged to put my families needs first during the meeting and if my baby needed me then that was ok."
"There is so much support from the other mothers that over the months I kept returning as I always knew I would gain information relevant to my child's current stage. It was no problem for me to take several books home with me after each meeting as I found this useful to help support my parenting journey."
"If I was to describe how it feels for me to go to a LLL meeting 'it is like seeing good friends whilst learning and being supported about how to be the Mum I want to be."
